What are drone aircraft?

The term ‘drone aircraft’ is used to describe an unmanned aerial vehicle (being an aircraft without a human pilot aboard).  Drone aircraft are either controlled by on-board computers or remotely by a pilot who may be in a different aircraft, on the ground or even, through the use of special monitoring and control stations, thousands of kilometres away.
There are many different types of drones, but this blog will principally distinguish between military and commercial drones.

Why drones?

The use of drone aircraft is a contemporary topic that has frequently been in the news, both for the increased use of drones in military operations and for the potential use of drones in commercial businesses.  The purpose of this blog is to provide a broad overview of drone aircraft so that a reader may be more informed next time that drones feature in the news.
